Summer in The Berra

or Canhole, as everyone "loving" calls the small city.
2 years ago I couldn't imagine living here. No one really does when they initially move here from another town. Someone from Singapore told me it really grows on you after a while.

And it does really grow on you. Especially in the lazy summer. Everything's a lusty green. It never gets too busy here, but there is a tiny downtown core with a modern shopping mall and some cafes that can become a regular haunt on any day. There are a few new and renovated clubs and bars with no cover, and cheap drinks on certain days so the nightlife is decent. Sydney and the beaches on the South Coast are a 3 hour drive away. It's easy to book a modest--> massive beach house for under $20 a person, and getaway for a long weekend.

Going to Syd for a symposium on RNAi, my so-called field of interest. (feels awkward calling it "My Field," like i have a stick up my ass). One crazy night in a budget hotel in the middle of Sydney..yay big city again! and another night at a budget hotel right on Bondi Beach. 3 of us from the lab will be crammed into the room, generously covered by the lab. Should be good. Like a going to a rock concert, the big-wigs are going to give talks on RNAi in cancer, therapeutics and agriculture. Reckon it's becoming the next big thing in medicine.

Always feel a bit out of touch in a big city now, having lived out of one for so long. Feel like Alice returning to Wonderland. It's familiar and I like it. But I feel small and..lost.

Hungry Kids of Hungary. My new favourite band, hailing from Brisbane.
