UBC makes headlines...

...for a homicide in the endowment lands, a forested area that also includes the Pacific Spirit Park jogging trails in the small, heavily wooded area. Unfortunately, on Friday night, a woman's body was discovered there, and police have determined that it was a homicide. Actually, for several years there have consistently been unreported and reported cases of rape near the forested areas of campus, which campus news have hushed likely due to the negative publicity it would draw (sources come from a UBC security worker and a St. John's Ambulance volunteer).
To underline that this was not a case of an unfortunate drug trafficking incident etc., the victim was a jogger, a mother and community leader with ties to the local municipal government.

For more information in the news, try: CTV British Columbia
or the CBC

The areas surrounding UBC are quite, residential, upscale neighbourhoods. Nevertheless, campus is also frequently patrolled by UBC security and the RCMP on the roads that go thru the endowment lands. But I guess it still goes without saying, don't go on the jogging trails alone, call UBC Safewalk if you need to walk through campus at dusk or nightfall.
